Most DIY website builders (Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy, Weebly, Shopify, Webflow) include some version of a built-in “site analyzer” or “SEO checklist.” Click a button, see green and red checkmarks, work through the list.

These tools are useful for the things they cover. They are also structurally incapable of telling you the truth about the things they don’t cover, because the builder making the tool has a commercial interest in flagging the items it can upsell you on and staying quiet about the items it cannot.

This is not a conspiracy. It is what every SaaS platform does. The built-in audit is a feature of the product, and the product is the platform.

What the built-in checks look at

The common pattern: the built-in audit flags things the platform can either fix automatically (and bill you for) or guide you through with one of its features:

  • Missing meta description? The builder will offer to write one for you.
  • Slow page speed? The builder will recommend its premium image-optimization add-on.
  • Missing structured data? The builder will suggest enabling its “SEO booster” feature.
  • Site not optimized for mobile? The builder will offer a paid template upgrade.

Each of those findings is real, and the upsells may even be reasonable. But the built-in audit is curated to the surface area the platform can monetize.

What the built-in checks usually miss

The findings that don’t get surfaced are the ones the platform cannot fix in a one-click upsell:

  • Schema markup that describes the wrong business type. (The platform’s default schema generator picked a category at template installation, and changing it requires manual code injection that most plans don’t allow.)
  • A duplicate analytics pixel firing twice. (This happens when a user enabled GA4 through the platform’s built-in setting and also pasted the tag manually through code injection. The platform doesn’t audit this because both installations are platform-supported features.)
  • A robots.txt directive accidentally blocking AI crawlers. (Many platforms have a default robots.txt that blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or Perplexity, and the platform’s built-in audit doesn’t flag this because it doesn’t view AI crawler access as a checked-for signal yet.)
  • Conversion path failures (forms that don’t submit on iPhone, CTAs below the fold, phone numbers that aren’t tappable). The platform’s audit doesn’t actually fill out the form and try it.
  • Trust signal placement on the rendered page. The platform’s audit doesn’t examine where things appear in the visual layout, only whether they exist in the markup.

These are the findings that move revenue. None of them are good upsell candidates, so they tend not to show up in the platform’s own audit.

What this means for you

If you have run your website’s built-in audit and it told you the site is in good shape, that is not the same as the site actually being in good shape. It means the things the platform is built to detect are passing. It does not mean everything is fine.

The honest version of a website audit is one written by someone who has no commercial interest in directing your fix in a particular direction. Someone who flags the duplicate pixel because it is a real problem, not because they sell a “duplicate pixel remover” plugin. Someone who tells you your schema is wrong because it is wrong, not because they want to sell you their “premium SEO module.”

That independence is structural. It is the reason a third-party audit will routinely find things the platform’s built-in tool will not.
