A common version of a website audit finding reads like this:

“Largest Contentful Paint exceeds 4.2 seconds on mobile, primarily attributable to render-blocking JavaScript and unoptimized image payload. Recommend deferring non-critical scripts and serving images in next-gen formats.”

That is technically correct. It is also useless to most of the people who pay for the audit.

We write the same finding as:

“Your homepage takes a little over four seconds to fully load on phones, which is slow enough that some visitors leave before the page is ready. The technical detail is still there, in the remedy, where someone implementing the fix needs it. The finding leads with what the owner needs to understand, in language that doesn’t require Googling.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Jargon is not just unfriendly. It is functionally exclusionary. When an audit reads like “LCP is 4.2s, mitigate with preload directives and defer non-critical assets,” the message a non-technical owner receives is: “this report is not for you.” The PDF gets handed off, or shelved, or forgotten.

The audit you paid for stops working the moment it stops being readable.

The fix isn’t dumbing the content down. The fix is leading with the meaning, then including the technical detail where it earns its place.

The two-layer structure we use

Layer 1: What it means. A clear, plain-English statement of what was found and why it matters for the business. This is what the owner reads.

Layer 2: The technical detail. The exact tag, value, code snippet, URL, or measurement. This is what gets used during implementation.

Layer 1 is on the surface. Layer 2 is one step down, in the remedy steps, where someone is actually applying the fix.

A non-technical owner can read the whole report at Layer 1 and come away with an accurate picture of what is going on with their site, what is most urgent, and what to do next, without ever needing to translate anything.

A few before-and-after comparisons from real audit findings:

  • Before: “Missing FAQPage JSON-LD structured data on /services page.” After: “Your services page doesn’t include the data Google needs to show a list of your common questions and answers directly in search results. Adding it can make your listing more prominent on the results page. Step-by-step instructions in the Remedy.”

  • Before: “GA4 tag detected via duplicate injection paths; deduplication recommended.” After: “Your Google Analytics tracking code is installed twice on the site, which means every visit is being counted as two. This makes your visitor numbers and conversion data unreliable. We will tell you which copy to remove and which to keep.”

  • Before: “Robots.txt blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot. Consider explicit opt-in for AI crawlers.” After: “Your site is currently telling ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity that they aren’t allowed to read it. If you want those AI assistants to be able to mention or recommend your business when people ask them for help, you need to update one file. Two lines, exact text included in the remedy.”

The technical accuracy didn’t change. The audience did.
